Eminent Domain Information
There is only one law firm in Missouri dedicated solely to the eminent domain issues facing property owners - Henry/Meuret. Our past results speak for themselves.
We stand committed to our clients’ property rights. To that end, every member of our legal team works toward protecting property owners from eminent domain or maximizing their compensation.
Knowledge = Power
We believe that knowledge is power and property owners threatened with eminent domain need all the power they can get because, unlike many legal disputes, with eminent domain the opponent is the actual government. Following this philosphy we have created this information page dealing with a number of common topics to assist property owners facing the possibility of losing property against their will. The ultimate power for property owners is to hire an attorney with extensive experience in eminent domain.
Henry/Meuret Protects Property Rights
For over 40 years, the firm has represented individuals, businesses and even other attorneys in a wide range of eminent domain disputes. We regularly defend our clients’ property rights against the largest condemning entities in the state: utilities, state and local governments , highway departments and private developers. Our experience covers a wide variety of eminent domain litigation, issues and strategies, including:
- Fighting eminent domain
- Compensation for property and business losses
- Relocation
- Issues pertaining to highways and roads
- Issues pertaining to electric transmission projects
- Private development using eminent domain
What we do not do.
At Henry/Meuret, our focus is on protecting landowners against government overreach and ensuring just compensation in eminent domain cases; typically a public project is involved and the government contacts owners to let them know that all or a portion of their property will be acquired for the project. We do not handle issues like code violations, where a local city, town or other government entity claims that property is unsafe due to code violations. These types of condemnations are generally not for public projects and impact only one property where there are alleged safety, health, or code violations. Even though those actions use the terms “condemnation” and “condemned”, it is an entirely different area of the law. In such cases, we recommend contacting a local land use attorney or legal aid office which can consult the applicable code and state law and potentially assist you
